Please know that even though we have reached are goal, and that this is a historical event in our parish’s history, we are still accepting pledges and gifts. If you have not yet made a gift to the campaign please consider doing so. The more participation we receive the more successful we will be as a parish.
Parish Renovations Update from Fr. Rich:
As I mentioned a few months ago, the new air conditioning in the chapel is a done deal. We decided to wait so the system will be operational during warm weather rather than install it now and have the ninety day warranty run out in the middle of winter when we would not be running it. It was just a practical matter. Look for the new system to be operational around June.
We have selected the roofing tiles for the church. We decided to go with real slate tiles, exactly what is up there now. They are from the exact same quarry in Pennsylvania that the current tiles were mined from almost 100 years ago. These will be darker, but, like the current tiles, in about 100 years they will also fade to gray. We expect to take delivery of the tiles and begin installing them in the next ninety days or so. The final contract will be signed next week, as soon as our attorney gets a peak at it.
We are also redoing the lightning rod system in the church. Do not laugh, the building gets hit every once in awhile and we need to bring this up to code.
We have begun to put the interior painting and repair of some of the inside walls out for bid. The first company has been in to look over the building, and after taking 100 photos, will be giving us an estimate. We expect several more bids. This will all have to be coordinated with the company that will be removing and refinishing the pews, repairing the windows, and putting in the new carpet, whose color has not yet been decided. It should be a busy early summer. I am told, looking at the schedule, that we will not interfere with the weddings scheduled. Any brides reading this should relax.
We have also commissioned an architect to begin the design work on the new handicapped ramp for the church. At the moment we cannot find a place for a handicapped bathroom, but at least we will be able to get folks into the building.
The problem with the church’s oil tank still is under review. We have applied for a grant from the State and await their response. The oil has leaked about eighteen feet into the ground. That is the bad news. The good news is that most of it seems to be encapsulated in clay. Pray for this one that it can be resolved without bankrupting the church. We are insured for a million dollars.
While all this is going on we are also making the final decisions on the mausoleum addition. We will be adding about 525 or so new crypts and I think about ninety niches. We have not yet settled on a contractor, but we are close. If we can get all this together we expect to begin work on the addition in the fall of 2009.
