Parish Renovations Update from Fr. Rich:
The update on the progress of the church and chapel renovations as of June 7, 2009: the air conditioning is up and running in the chapel. It is really amazing. It would often take as much as twelve or more hours of running the system before the temperature would drop significantly. Now, in less than four hours we have gone from 80 degrees to 68 degrees. This should be a significant savings on our electrical bill. We will be able to save more when the new thermostat is installed, since it will allow the system to cool in stages, using much less electricity. Right now the unit sounds a bit loud, but we are looking into a sound baffling system.
The church has turned out to be an amazing history of how things had been built over the last century. It seems we have examples of every building innovation system that was developed over the last 100 years. The primary problem is that these systems do not like to “play well together.” To give you all the technical issues would take pages, but here are a few examples. The brickwork that is deteriorating in some places is deteriorating to the point that it can no longer be repaired. The system decades ago used a sand based mortar between the bricks, so that the moisture would seep harmlessly out of the walls through the sand. At some point in the church history the mortar was covered with a new wonder material called gypsum, which is watertight. That forced the moisture back into the bricks, causing them to deteriorate virtually to dust in some places. Not good for holding up the building. The building is also ringed with rain gutters just like in your home. The ones we have are copper. However, at some point the gutters were repaired, and when they were repaired, someone changed the way they were attached to the roof. We suspect this was done to try and save the church money. These modifications actually dumped water right into the gaps between the walls when the gutters overflowed, not good.
The doors of the church I suspect are a gardener’s dream. Some years ago they were sealed with the new wonder paint, polyurethane. This sealed the wood, slowing moisture’s ability to evaporate. With no place to go, the wood began to grow plants like soil, lichen, mold, and even bacteria has thrived. It has taken a full week of work just to get that stuff out and take the wood down to its original surface. We finally needed to have them stripped with acid. The list goes on.
Here is where we are today. The new upper gutters are being fabricated. By the time you read this, the front doors will be completely restored. In about two weeks, or when the new gutters are installed, the upper slate will be up on the top part of the roof. The stained glass window company will begin to remove several squares of glass at a time to restore them. A chimney, that we think was for a pot belly stove that sat in the sacristy, is gong to be torn down and rebuilt because we are trying to keep the exterior of the church historically correct. We will be meeting with the architect to begin to deal with the interior, answering questions like how to repair the 100 year old plaster walls, beginning to think about a color scheme, etc. There will be a meeting to discuss the location and design of a new handicapped ramp, and if we can find a place to put it, the installation of a handicapped bathroom in the rear of the building. This may be more information than you care to have, but it is an attempt to keep everyone up to date, especially those who ask why the roof is not finished yet. I have a phrase that I find myself using more and more lately, “It is never easy.” Please pray for the speedy completion of our project.
