RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Overview:
The St. Rose of Lima Religious Education Program provides religious instruction for students in grades
K through 8 with an enrollment of approximately
twelve hundred students. Our program consists of a faith formation curriculum that cultivates the gradual faith development of our students. The curriculum encompasses the diocesan guidelines in the six core areas of catechesis: God, Sacred Scripture, Sacraments, Church, prayer/worship and moral life.
Orientation:
A brief orientation of our program and a parent handbook are provided to all parents of students on the first day of class.
First Reconciliation and First Eucharist:
Second grade students celebrate the Sacraments of First Reconciliation during the month of January and First Eucharist during the month of May. Diocesan policy requires each student to attend one full year of religious instruction (first grade religious education) prior to entering the sacramental preparation in second grade. All parents are required to attend a sacramental preparation workshop.
Confirmation:
Eighth grade students celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation on a date (presently in
late winter) determined by the Bishop’s Office. Preparation for Confirmation begins in the
sixth grade and concludes just prior to the reception of the sacrament. All sixth, seventh and eighth grade students are required to complete
community ministry each year as follows: 6th Grade - 1 hour; 7th Grade - 5 hours;
8th Grade - 10 hours. All 8th
grade parents are required to attend a sacramental preparation workshop.
Classes:
Classes are offered for grades 1 through 5 on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons from
4:15 PM to 5:30 PM or
grades K through
8 on Saturday mornings from 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM and for grades 6 through 8 on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from 7:00 PM to 8:15 PM. Please phone the Religious Education Office
(732-308-0215) for detailed information regarding the classes for particular grade levels.
Registration:
An in-person registration is offered on a Wednesday evening and a Saturday morning during the Spring. A choice of class days is given on a first come, first serve basis. Due to the limited classroom availability no re-registration can be accepted after the second week of classes. Newly registered members of the parish should register for Religious Education as soon as possible.
Catechetical Ministry:
Our catechists are faith-filled volunteers who are committed to the faith development and teaching of our faith to the children. Diocesan Catechist Certification is offered to all of our volunteers. Each classroom has a teacher and an aide. The program is always in need of volunteer teachers, special education teachers, aides, substitute teachers, nurses,
traffic volunteers, hall and door monitors, and more. If you are interested in serving in this ministry in any capacity, please call the Religious Education
Office. Currently, all weekly volunteers receive free tuiton.
